Capacity building for health professionals on breastfeeding & IYCF
Training Workshops and Seminars:
BBF organizes specialized training workshops and seminars for healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, midwives, and community health workers. These sessions cover essential topics such as the importance of breastfeeding, techniques for successful breastfeeding, and handling breastfeeding challenges.
Health professionals are also trained on IYCF guidelines and practices, including exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and appropriate complementary feeding strategies after six months.
Evidence-based Guidelines:
BBF provides health professionals with the latest evidence-based guidelines from international health organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. These guidelines help professionals understand the scientific and health benefits of breastfeeding and IYCF practices.
Practical Skills Development:
Hands-on training is a significant part of the program, where health professionals practice breastfeeding counseling, problem-solving for breastfeeding difficulties, and advising mothers on how to maintain exclusive breastfeeding and introduce complementary foods at the appropriate age.
The training also includes addressing common breastfeeding challenges such as latching problems, low milk supply, and engorgement, and providing supportive care for mothers facing these issues.
Counseling Skills for IYCF:
A major focus of the capacity-building program is developing effective counseling skills for health professionals. This includes how to communicate the benefits of breastfeeding and IYCF to mothers, address myths and misconceptions, and provide emotional and practical support to ensure mothers can successfully breastfeed.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
BBF incorporates monitoring and evaluation into their capacity-building programs to assess the effectiveness of training. This ensures that healthcare providers are applying the skills and knowledge gained from the sessions and making a positive impact on the breastfeeding rates and IYCF practices in their communities.
Community Outreach:
After receiving training, health professionals are encouraged to extend their knowledge to community outreach programs and home visits, ensuring that even mothers in remote or rural areas receive the support they need for successful breastfeeding and proper infant feeding practices.
Supporting Baby-Friendly Hospitals:
BBF works to integrate breastfeeding training into hospital and clinic settings, encouraging the adoption of Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) standards, where healthcare facilities are equipped and staffed to provide optimal support for breastfeeding mothers.
